Application to Haul Water as a Water Source

  • TriCounty Health Department discourages water hauling as a permanent method for culinary water supply because of its negative impacts on public health.

    • Hauling water has a higher potential of contamination as it is transferred between receptacles, thus increasing the risk of illness to the consumer.
    • Hauling water limits the amount of water available to the individual. Though we applaud water conservation, in this case water conservation may lead to a
decrease in modern hygienic practices that impact personal and public health.

Approval to haul water is generally reserved for situations where hauling is the only practicable way of obtaining potable water. There is no guarantee that the request will be granted.

If you want to request to haul water as your water source, you will need to submit the following
information, with your application, for review by the department:

    • A written statement explaining why you want/need to haul water.
      • The frequency of use of the property or the economics of drilling a well will be considered, but may not have a heavy bearing on the department’s determination.
    • Documentation of why other options are not practicable. This may include unsuccessful
nearby wells; either for no flow, or non-potable water encountered.
      • To prove unsuccessful nearby wells please provide:
          ○ Well driller’s logs and map of well locations for all existing wells within a 1
mile radius of the property. If there are more than 10 wells within 1 mile,
submit logs and map of the nearest 10.
          ○ Well water sample results (bacteriological and chemical) from the closest
wells if you are stating that the water is not potable.
          ○ The well driller’s logs can be obtained at the Utah Division of Water Rights
website https://waterrights.utah.gov/ or you can contact the local office at
        (435) 247-1514 located at 318 North Vernal Avenue, Vernal, Utah 84078.

If approval is granted, certain requirements will be enforced, including: approved storage tank of at least 1,000 gallons, and the water must come from an approved public water supply.
